New committee elected
The SURG Annual General Meeting on 4th October was well attended, and draft minutes will be available on the members' page soon.
The new committee was elected:
- Chair: Leanne Russell
- Secretary: Trisha McCormick
- Treasurer: Lynne Goudie
- Membership Secretary: Carolyn Mason
- Recruitment Officer: Chris Bradley
- Walks Secretaries: Glyn & Sabine Jarvis
- Social Secretary: Paul Russell
- Intergroups Liaison Officer: Richard Blakely
- Publicity Officer: Carol Buss
- Footpaths Officer: Andrea Coates
- Countryside Officer: Steve Dodd
- Web Officers: Anna Grigson & Ian Wall
A big thank you to those who have offered their time to serve on the committee this year because without a committee there's no SURG. With all roles filled we have a strong team to take SURG forward in the year ahead. But of course, there's no SURG without our members and the many who volunteer to lead events on the programme so thank you all for your continuing support.
Surrey Area AGM
A date for your diaries: the Surrey Area Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 7th February 2009
at the Chichester Hall, Witley at 2pm. Prior to the meeting the Farnham group will be leading two walks,
details of which will be on our Winter programme.
Walks and socials needed for the Winter programme
Planning for the Winter programme is well underway, and our thanks to those who have already submitted events.
There are still plenty of spaces to be filled and you have until Sunday 9th November to send in your walks and socials
using the walks and socials submission form. Many thanks in advance for lots of walks and socials!

Walks programme tip
Most walks on the web version of the walks programme have a link to a map showing the start point of the walk. It's a useful facility which could save you time (and a call to the walk leader).
Greensand Way tunnel opens
A new tunnel carrying the Greensand Way under the A3 near Thursley is
now open for use by farmers, walkers, riders and cyclists. This will make our Greensand way walk on Saturday 8th November that bit easier,
so why not come along on this final stage of this 105 mile walk that SURG has been walking in stages over the past two years.
SURG features in South East Walker
If you're a SURG member you should have recently received the latest issue of South East Walker, which includes
an article by Carolyn Mason and Orson Rhodes about SURG's recent Cotswolds weekend. If you have an article you'd like to
submit for the Under 40's 'Future Focus' section please send it to the Chair. It can be on anything relating to SURG,
and you need to send the text together with one photo in jpeg format.
Paul’s Pick of the Pubs
By Paul Russell
The Three Horseshoes, Dye House Road, Thursley, Surrey GU8 6QD (01252 703268)
The Three Horseshoes is a great pub in an ideal area for walking. The Greensand Way passes nearby and with the
new A3 underpass now open it's even more attractive to walkers. Saved from closure in 1999 by a group of
24 local people who clubbed together to purchase it, the pub is now thriving with home cooked food and
of course decent real ales. It's open all day at weekends but it's advisable to phone in advance if you would like
food. We will be visiting The Three Horseshoes for a drink on the final stage of our Greensand Way series of walks
on Saturday 8th November. Why not come along and join us for a drink in this fine old establishment?
More pubs needed!
We're on the lookout for more pubs to include in our regular 'Pick of the pubs' feature. If you know a good pub
that you'd like to recommend for Pick of the Pubs, please send the details to
our Social Secretary.
