Once you've decided to lead a walk and you've worked out all the details, here's a guide to what (and when) things will happen.
First off, make sure you're logged in.
The form itself will ask you for the basic details - date, time, length and a suitable name.
The description can be as simple or descriptive as you like - some people just put a few sentences, while others like to describe all the nice things you'll be seeing. It's completely up to you.
There may be details that you'd prefer not to show to non-members, in which case you can put more detail in the 'members' section (only visible if you're logged in) and less in the 'public' section.
Decide whether you want to limit the group size or not - again, this is up to you. A typical group size is perhaps 20 people - some people prefer slightly fewer, and others are happy to take whatever numbers come along. You can change this at a later point if you're happy for more people to come, or numbers are getting a bit high and you'd like a limit.
If you don't specify a limit, a 'safety' limit of 50 is applied automatically. If you later decide you can handle more (only recommended with multiple leaders), you can set a higher limit.
Put a short description of where the walk starts - addresses and a postcode are ok for built-up areas, while more rural locations will probably need a more textual description. Postcodes are often of little use for car parks that are rural, because the nearest postcode may be far enough way to make the car park's location unclear. In general, the more rural the car park, the more important the textual description and an accurate map placement.
Lastly, find the starting location on the map - either by searching for it or just moving the 'pin'. The map buttons will use this location. It's a lot easier to do this on a desktop than a mobile so if you can't easily do this and the start location is easy to determine from your description, leave it and the webmaster will do it for you.
When you're happy, click 'Submit'. You'll be taken to a confirmation page with a link to the risk assessment.
In almost all cases just tick the big box at the top and hit 'Submit', but please read the rest of this section before you do your first one.
We populate this automatically with your walk details - all we need you to do is two quick things:
If you did a recce, enter the date that you did it. If you haven't done one, or you don't know when you might do one (or you simply can't due to practical issues), just leave this blank.
You'll then see a list of 'risks' and other observations. You're not committing to actually doing any of them - just acknowledging that you're aware of them.
You'll be able to see and edit most of your walk details right away - it'll show up in My Walks
Your page will stay in pending until a committee member has checked and okayed it - usually within a day or so, and often within a few hours.
All walks are open to register immediately once approved, and you can see who's signed up using the 'Walker list' button.
If that all sounds good to you - submit your walk!
